The biggest combat sports festival in European history had an opening ceremony worthy of its status within the mixed martial arts world. The BRAVE Serbia International Combat Week opened in style last Saturday evening, with Belgrade standing still for the beginning of an MMA event that will take over the country’s capital for a week, culminating with BRAVE CF 69.
During the week, the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) will put together, in association with Bahrain’s BRAVE Combat Federation, the Serbian MMA Federation (SMMAF), and Bahrain MMA Federation (BMMAF), the biggest edition of the amateur World Championships, and the BRAVE Serbia International Combat Week will then be headlined by BRAVE CF’s return to Serbia, with BRAVE CF 69.
IMMAF president Kerrith Brown officially opened up the 2023 edition of the BICW and thanked the efforts from all parties involved in making history happen. During his opening speech, Mr. Brown thanked His Highness Shaikh Khaled bin Hamad Al Khalifa and Bahrain’s BRAVE CF, as well as the BMMAF for their support of the event.
‘’I would like to thank His Highness Shaikh Khaled bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Mohammed Shahid, BRAVE CF president, and the entire BRAVE CF team for making this event possible. A standing applause to Serbia prime minister Ana Brnabic, and the president of the SMMAF, Luka Nikolic. This is the 8th World Championships in IMMAF history. With 550 athletes, this is the biggest edition yet. 62 federations will be represented, another record. This edition will have participation from Africa, Asia, Pan-America, Europe, and Oceania, showing the importance of IMMAF’s work on a continental level’’, said Mr. Brown.
Mr. Luka Nikolic, president of the Serbian MMA Federation also spoke at the opening ceremony, and hailed his home country for making history in becoming the first European country to host an edition of the BRAVE International Combat Week.
‘’We are entering history as the first country in Europe to be hosts. We broke many records before the start of the competition, and I hope we break many more by the end of the festivities’’.
Mr. Zoran Gajic, Serbia Minister of Sports, showcased the government’s support by helping to officially open the BRAVE Serbia International Combat Week and mentioned Serbia was in great company during his speech.
‘’Belgrade is the first European city to host an event of this magnitude in one of the world’s fastest-growing sports, and when you look at the countries that have previously hosted this event, namely the United States, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates, we have been given really a lot of confidence’’.
The BRAVE Serbia International Combat Week is in full force with the first round of the IMMAF World Championships taking place this Sunday, with festivities and events happening throughout the week in a combat sports festival that will reform mixed martial arts in Europe forever.
