BRAVE Combat Federation President Mohammed “The Hawk” Shahid has come out in Jose “Shorty” Torres’ defense following the controversial BRAVE CF 73 Bantamweight title fight in Bogota, Colombia, this past weekend. USA’s Torres beat South Africa’s Ndebele via split decision to be crowned the new 135-pound champion in a show worthy of a main event and title fight when the two global stars went toe-to-toe and hip-to-hip over 25 minutes in the highlight event of the Pan-American Combat Week. While many members of the global MMA community were left debating the result, President Shahid felt that Torres implemented the perfect game plan and did what was needed to win.

“After watching the fight live, I believed that Nkosi won that fight. But after seeing it for the second time, that first round made me change my mind." “What got “Shorty” the win was his fighting IQ and experience,” says President Shahid. “That first round played a significant role because it made things so much clearer in the second, third, fourth, and fifth rounds. The second round was an equally significant moment as it was where 'Shorty' knew what was coming to him,” said President Shahid.

Ndebele gained the ascendancy in the first round with his teep kicks, knees to the midsection, and inside leg kicks to nullify Torres’ high-level wrestling. The South African looked very comfortable with his silky striking, cutting his American opponent open at one point. Torres continued trying to close the distance and produced one of many hip tosses, but Ndebele did well to escape as he hit the canvas. Ndebele used his height and reach to his advantage, but the American’s experience and high level soon found him making inroads, using angles and leg kicks to neutralize Ndebele’s attack.

In round three, Torres produced another big hip toss followed by an unsuccessful guillotine choke before Ndebele tried to level change and take the back of Torres, who then tossed his opponent again before transitioning from a Kimura to an arm bar. In round four, Torres continued working the lead leg of Nkosi before closing the distance again and showcasing his array of skills with another beautiful Judo hip toss.

In the final minutes, Ndebele shot for a takedown before Torres used his Jiu-Jitsu to chase another armbar moments before the final buzzer sounded. While Ndebele did more damage on the stand-up, showcased clinical escapes, and did well to avoid various submission attempts, it was Torres’ ability to cut off angles, implement high-level Judo hip-tosses and produce and overall higher work rate in the clinch and on the canvas that got the judges nod - winning the fight via a 49-45, 48-47, 49-47 split decision victory.

“Torres displayed his experience and fighting IQ from the second round until the end of the fight," said President Shahid. "From the end of the first five minutes, Torres knew what the next four rounds would look like and made the necessary changes," concluded President Shahid.
